THIRTYSOMETHING: ANOTHER COUNTRY (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas about the personal and professional dilemmas confronting a close-knit group of friends -- urban baby boomers in their thirties -- living in Philadelphia. In this episode, the book that Nancy wrote with her son Ethan has finally been published, but the excitement is marred by her severe back spasms and bouts of nausea. She assures Elliot that pressure over the book is causing the pain, but she visits her doctor to be certain. After her appointment, Nancy tells Elliot that the doctor wants to perform a more thorough examination. Elliot begins to worry about his wife's health and anticipates the results of the lengthy examination. Suddenly thrust into the role of the responsible parent, Elliot must get the kids ready for school and cannot answer their plaintive pleas as to their mother's whereabouts. The doctor gravely informs Nancy and Elliot that she may have a tumor in one of her ovaries and that they need a few days to verify her condition. The wait is unbearable, but they agree to keep the news between themselves. After a few tension-filled days, Nancy and Elliot learn that she does have ovarian cancer and that surgery will be needed to remove the tumor. Elliot reveals to Michael that Nancy has cancer, despite having promised to keep it a secret. And Nancy begins to question her own desire to live, as Elliot tries desperately to bolster her inner strength. Includes commercials, promos, and a public service announcement.
