READING RAINBOW: DIGGING UP DINOSAURS (TV)
Summary
One in this series of educational children's programs that encourages children to read, hosted by LeVar Burton. This episode's featured book is "Digging Up Dinosaurs: And Putting Them Together Again," by Aliki. Narrated by Linda Gelman, the book tells the story of a little girl who likes to visit museums and look at dinosaur skeletons. The girl gives a brief history of dinosaurs, explains the way fossils were discovered, and talks about the process that scientists use to preserve and join together the bones to make skeletons. The program includes jokes by an animated dinosaur from the book, "Tyrannosaurus Wrecks: A Book of Dinosaur Riddles," by Noelle Sterne, illustrated by Victoria Chess. Additionally, Burton takes a field trip to Utah's Dinosaur National Monument, the only place in the world to see dinosaur bones embedded in the earth, the way nature preserved them. The park ranger talks about the dinosaur fossils while a scientist who studies fossils, also known as a paleontologist, uncovers bones from the side of a cliff. The program also features footage of modern animals living in the San Diego Zoo that have descended from dinosaurs, children's reviews of other books about dinosaurs, and an excerpt from the film, "One Million Years B.C."
