HELLO, DO YOU HEAR US?, PART 1: RED HOT (TV)
Summary
This is the first series produced by the Soviet-British Creative Association, a collaboration between the Soviet Union and Great Britain that was instigated by Central Independent Television with the purpose of exchanging cultural material. This five-part series explores the changing socio-political environment of the Soviet Union. All the members of the crew headed by Latvian producer/director Yuris Podnieks were Russian, which gave them much more access to sensitive areas than a crew from the West would have had. In the first part, segments include coverage of the bloody aftermath following the unrest in Uzbekistan; interviews with disgruntled workers at an engine company where one of the first strikes in recent years took place; and post-explosion footage both inside Chernobyl's fourth reactor, where the camera follows workers who were lured to the job by high wages and the prestige that comes with working here, and the nearby countryside prohibited zone, where more than 300 people have illegally returned to their homes. (This program received the Prix Italia for Documentaries, 1990 Prix Italia.)
