METROLINE: FROM BEIJING TO BAY RIDGE: NEW YORK'S CHINESE YOUTH (TV)

Summary

One in this series of public affairs programs whcih focus on issues of concern to New York City. This program, hosted by Mike Shuster, examines issues facing the growing Chinese immigrant population in New York City, and focuses on the special needs of immigrant teenagers. Topics include the following: Chinese stereotypes; the difficulties in adjusting to the language barrier and bicultural conflicts; truancy, drop out rates, and interest in gangs due to feelings of alienation and racial problems; and the stress involved in working after school and helping parents who do not speak English. The program focuses on the efforts of the staff of New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn to help the community by offering English as a Second Language (ESL), English classes that are taught in Chinese, and other bilingual classes that place Chinese students on an equal level of learning with their American peers. The program also examines the efforts of the Chinatown Planning Council in Queens to teach parents English and to implement the Project Reach program, which works towards solving racial problems in the high schools. Individuals appearing in this program include demographer Frank Vardy of the New York City Department of Planning; Peter Kwong, author of "The New Chinatown"; Betty Lee Sung, author of "Chinese Immigrant Children in New York City"; Peter Fu of the Chinatown Planning Council in Brooklyn; staff members from New Utrecht High School, including principal Allen Leibowitz, Rhoda Agin of the Communication Arts department, guidance counselor Marisa Rini, physics teacher Irving Jablon, and Joel Diamond of the physical education department; President Pauline Chu and Gwo-Hwa Tu of the Queens Chinese Parents Association; Feiyen Chien of the Chinatown Planning Council in Queens; Don Kao of Project Reach; and various students and parents.
