Summary
Part one of two. One in this series of interview programs hosted by urbane raconteur Dick Cavett. In this program, author John Cheever discusses a variety of topics relating to the craft of writing, and shares personal memories. This appearance by Cheever came during a tumultuous period between his recovery from alcoholism and his ultimately fatal bout with cancer. Topics discussed include the self-destructiveness of the American writer, an interview Cheever did with his daughter for Newsweek magazine, and his experiences with teaching inmates in a New York prison.
