AMERICAN PLAYHOUSE: THE GHOST WRITER (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas. Adapted from the Philip Roth novella, this multi-layered drama set in the 1950s concerns a young writer who visits the New England home of a reclusive older writer and struggles to reconcile his artistic integrity with his family's middle-class values. As the narrative begins, twenty-three-year-old Nathan Zuckerman arrives at the home of the renowned I.A. Lonoff and his volatile wife. Zuckerman seeks from Lonoff the literary approval that his father has denied him. He soon meets the mysterious young Amy Bellette, who has been living with the Lonoffs while organizing some of the author's papers. Zuckerman perceives that Amy's passionate infatuation with Lonoff is the source of tension between husband and wife. In his heated imagination, Zuckerman forges a strange scenario in which Amy is Anne Frank grown to womanhood and Lonoff her savior. This program is followed by "One Fine Day," a montage of images about great women, set to music. Includes a promo for the following week's production, "Breakfast With Les and Bess."
