DOHNANYI AND THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA (TV)

Summary

At Severance Hall in Cleveland, Ohio, Christoph von Dohnanyi conducts his inaugural concert as music director of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. Before the performance, Dohnanyi discusses a wide array of topics in an interview with host Patrick Watson. He recalls his memories of Nazi Germany, including his father's plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, for which he was hanged by the Nazis when his son was only 15 years old. The maestro also shares his thoughts on music, advising young conductors to maintain a healthy balance between their professional and personal lives, and talks about the personality traits that he believes are necessary to be an effective conductor. The orchestra then performs Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 2, as well as Alban Berg's Violin Concerto, featuring violinist Itzhak Perlman in his 13th solo appearance with this orchestra.
