Summary
One in this series on the arts. This program is a part of a series which focuses on the works of Edith Wharton. In this story, a young woman from a small town finds her life greatly altered by a summer romance with an artist from New York. Originally from an uncivilized society in the mountains, the young woman, Charity, was brought down the mountain at the age of two by Mr. Royall, an attorney from the town below, so she could be raised as a Christian. Now that Charity has grown into a young lady, the lawyer finds himself in love with her. Charity, however, despises him because she is confused about her place in the world: She does not fit in with the people of the town, but cannot return to the mountain society either. When an artist from New York arrives to sketch some old homes in the area, Charity is hired to be his tour guide. She immediately falls for the outsider and has an affair with him. She hopes that he will take her back to New York with him, but soon discovers that he is engaged to another woman.
