GREAT PERFORMANCES: THE ORCHESTRA (TV)

Summary

One in this series on the performing arts. This program consists of a montage of images set to classical music. The images display a surrealistic and dark-humored view of life as they capture everyday activities being played out in odd settings. Quick editing and overlapping of shots bring the dynamics of each music piece to life. In addition, the images tend to display various stages of life as well as evoke the emotions that accompany them. The relationship between men and women is explored throughout the program. Images include the following: a group of elderly people having dinner in a garden; soldiers lining up for battle in the middle of a museum; women running about a mansion in their undergarments; and a man and a woman floating in a church. The music brought to life in this program are the following pieces: Frederic Chopin's "Sonata No. 2"; Tomaso Albinoni's "Adagio in G Minor"; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Piano Concerto No. 21"; Gioacchino Rossini's "The Thieving Magpie"; Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria"; and Maurice Ravel's "Bolero."

Cataloging of this program was made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
