VILLA ALEGRE {HAPPY VILLAGE}: RIOS DEL MUNDO
{RIVERS OF THE WORLD} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of children's programs featuring music and animation, as well as live-action clips about the town of Villa Alegre, where people speak and understand both English and Spanish. This program examines the rivers and oceans of the world. Following a clip of animated Native American designs about evolution, several villagers sing about bodies of water. In animated segments and documentary clips, the following issues are addressed: aquatic life; the way streams become rivers and oceans; civilizations' dependence on water; water's role in generating electricity; and aquatic recreational activities. Next, a marine biology student narrates a short film of an underwater scuba dive with seals, sea urchins, and schools of fish. Animated clips review the numbers in Spanish and the numeral eight. In a documentary profile, a boy exchanges letters with his father, who encounters majestic but dangerous glaciers in the frozen Arctic. In a classroom sketch, the kids discuss how litter and pollution kill sea life, illustrated by footage of trash-filled waters, followed by a clip of a Fisher Price toy boat voyaging down a river. As several kids try to build a clubhouse atop a raft, they examine photos of riverside monuments and bodies of water. In the final sketch, two kids devise a way to offer relief to Senor Topo the rabbit, whose home has been flooded. The program concludes with a clip of animated Native American designs.

(This program is in English and Spanish without subtitles.)
