ALAN KING: INSIDE THE COMEDY MIND: GEORGE CARLIN (TV)

Summary

One in this series of talk shows in which host Alan King chats with professionals about the art of comedy. King's guest for this edition is George Carlin, who discusses the following topics, among others: his early childhood attraction to film and radio comedians; the influence of his mother, who was a gifted storyteller; his enlistment in the Air Force at age seventeen which led to a job as a radio announcer in Louisiana; his early career as a more conventional "suit-and-tie comedian" in the early 1960s, including his work with partner Jack Burns and his numerous television appearances; his suspension from the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas in 1969 for using a mild profanity in performance, a turning point in his life and career, which led him to evolve into a countercultural persona truer to his own nature; the influence of the comedy renaissance that included Lenny Bruce and Nichols & May; how he feels about the current bumper crop of stand-up comedians, including the controversial Andrew "Dice" Clay; stand-up as an art form shaped by the audience. Includes footage of "What Am I Doing in New Jersey?" (1988). Commercials deleted.
