LAND OF DREAMS, THE (TV)
Summary
The action of this compelling drama is driven by personal responses to South Africa's political and social problems. Joseph Mnwana (Shai) is a black South African who has fled his country after being accused of participating in the murder of a South African police officer. He arrives in England, where he has difficulty convincing officials that his life will be in danger if he is returned to his native land. Despite their very different cultural backgrounds, Mnwana and his solicitor, David Samuels (Sher), a white South African expatriate, manage to work together on Mnwana's petition for political asylum through their shared disapproval of the South African government. While awaiting word on his petition, Mnwana begins a relationship with a young artist named Laura (Davies), but he finds memories of South Africa difficult to escape. This program is the first television work written by the young English playwright Allan Cubitt. The music for the program was composed by the South African exile Jonas Gwanga, who cowrote the Oscar-nominated score for the film "Cry Freedom."
