ART OF THE WESTERN WORLD {EPISODE 105}: REALMS OF LIGHT - THE BAROQUE (TV)

Summary

One in this nine-part series exploring the history of western art. In this program, Michael Wood examines the paintings and architecture that were created during the Baroque period of the seventeenth century. Wood explains the counter-reformation that took place in Rome in the 1600s, causing artists to flock to the renewed city to build churches, which were designed to attract the attention of the public. This led to the development of an ornamental style in the art world. In addition, the scientific achievements of Galileo, the discovery of the Americas, and the exploration of the Far East are compared to the achievements of artists. Toward the end of the program, Wood explores the history and art achievements of the Dutch. With the help of art historians Irving Lavin and Simon Schama, Wood examines the lives and works of the following artists, among others: Pietro Berrettini da Cortona, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Gianlorenzo Bernini, Peter Paul Rubens, Diego Velazques, and Rembrandt van Rijn. Works displayed by these artists include the following, among others: Pietro Berrettina da Cortona's ceiling frescoes in the Barberini Palace entitled "Allegory of Divine Providence and Barberini Power"; Carravaggio's controversial religious paintings; Bernini's "David," Santa Maria della Vittoria, St. Peter's, and the Cornaro Chapel; Francesco Barromini's "Sant' Ivo della Sapienza"; various artists who designed abbeys in Vienna; equestrian portraits; Rubens' allegory paintings of the life of Maria de' Medici and "Descent from the Cross"; Diego Velazquez's "The Forge of Vulcan," various portraits, and "Las Meninas"; Rubens' paintings reflecting his love of his second wife Helena; genre paintings by Dutch artists; Rembrandt's "The March Out of the Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq"; and self-portraits by Rembrandt.
