AMERICAN PLAYHOUSE: HOT SUMMER WINDS (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic anthology series. Based on two short stories by Hisaye Yamamoto, this program concerns a woman's recollection of turbulent events in her family life during a California earthquake in the summer of 1934. Ten-year-old Yoneko lives with her brother, Seigo, and their Japanese immigrant parents; their mother writes poetry and belongs to a poetry club, and their father is a farmer who is uneasy with his wife's intelligence. A sensitive Latino migrant worker, Marpo, begins working on the farm as a hired hand, but, though Marpo befriends the children, he upsets the fragile balance in the family. When Seigo and Yoneko's mother wins a poetry contest, their parents' relationship seems to deteriorate completely, and a series of events are triggered which leave the children, mother, and Marpo alone together on the farm, waiting for the father to return.
