AMERICAN PLAYHOUSE: THE REVOLT OF MOTHER / PIGEON FEATHERS (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic anthology series. This program consists of two television adaptations of American short stories. The first feature, an adaptation of Mary E. Wilkins Freeman's "The Revolt of Mother," takes place on a New England farm in 1890 and concerns an obedient and dutiful wife who teaches her obstinate husband the importance of compassion and compromise. When Adam Penn (Sanders) builds an unnecessary new barn for his livestock instead of a home for his wife and children, his spirited wife, Sarah (Madigan), takes action. In his absence, Sarah moves their furniture and their children into the spacious barn, asserting her will for the first time. (This feature received the following awards: the Blue Ribbon at the American Film and Video Festival; the Christopher Award; and the Silver Award at the Houston International Film Festival.) The second feature, an adaptation of John Updike's "Pigeon Feathers," is a contemporary story also set on a New England farm. David is a boy on the verge of manhood who attempts to forge an understanding of spiritual and religious matters and struggles to define the notion of mortality. (This feature received the Cine Golden Eagle Award.)
