COMPILATION OF JIM HENSON'S EARLY YEARS, A (TV)
Summary
A compilation of excerpts featuring early versions of Jim Henson's Muppets. Included are a series of clips from Henson's local Washington, D.C., series "Sam and Friends" (1955-1961), which marked the beginning of his career; six brief commercials for Wilkins Coffee and two brief commercials for Esskay meat products; and excerpts from "The Jimmy Dean Show," "The Jack Paar Program," and "Fanfare" with Al Hirt. "Sam and Friends" clips include a segment with a Muppet version of the Louis Prima-Keely Smith jazz duet "That Old Black Magic"; Muppets on horseback trying to dismount; two Muppets using creative visualization to draw letters, numbers, musical notes, and pictures in the air; Kermit the Frog interviewing Muppet versions of Chet Huntley and David Brinkley; "Punsmoke: Powder Burn," a Western parody about cowardly U.S. Marshall Matt Dilly; a quartet of Muppets singing "I've Got You Under My Skin" (in color); Yorick talking about midnight raids of the icebox while he devours a plate of crackers, celery, and olives (in color); and "Poison to Poison" (in color), a parody of Edward R. Murrow's "Person to Person" series. Rowlf the Dog is featured in a series of clips from "The Jimmy Dean Show," including a segment with Lassie, who performs a variety of stunts. Other clips feature Muppet Slinkys dancing to the song "Java" and Hirt chatting with a two-headed Muppet monster on "Fanfare" (1965); and an appearance by Kermit on "The Jack Paar Program" (1964).
