PRIMETIME LIVE {JUVENILE CAR THIEVES; PETER ARNETT; POLICE BRUTALITY AND HOME VIDEO; HOLLYWOOD AND HAPPY ENDINGS} (TV)

Summary

One in this news magazine series co-anchored by Sam Donaldson and Diane Sawyer. In this program, in a segment on auto theft, Sawyer interviews the following people: a fourteen-year-old car thief, who demonstrates how easy it is to steal a car; a member of an Auto Theft Task Force in Florida, who takes her to a "chop shop"; two police informants, who explain how car theft operations work; and the chief of police in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who explains his method of dealing with juvenile car thieves. Also, Sawyer lists the various devices on the market to protect cars from thieves. Next, Sam Donaldson interviews war correspondent Peter Arnett. Donaldson shows Arnett footage of President Bush and various U.S. senators criticizing his coverage of the Persian Gulf War, and clips of Arnett reporting from Baghdad. Arnett comments on the criticisms made against him and discusses Iraqi government censorship. Next, Judd Rose reviews the impact of video footage of police brutality on various trials throughout the country. Bo Dietl, former undercover police officer, defends the use of force by officers and Tom Dargan, former supervisor of the New York State Transit Police, comments on the allowance of force, but not violence by officers. Also, videotape of police brutality is shown, including the footage used in the Rodney King trial.

Finally, Judd Rose reports on Hollywood's use of happy endings in films. Highlights of this piece include the following: clips from "Pretty Woman," "Rocky," "Awakenings," and "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers"; Jonathan Lawton, who wrote the original script for "Pretty Woman," discusses the changes made in his script; director Garry Marshall talks about wanting to have happy endings in his films; David Rosenfelt, former marketing executive, relates the reality that happy endings sell better than depressing ones; Peter Travers, film critic for "Rolling Stone," discusses the greed in the film industry; actor Kevin McCarthy talks about the original ending of "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers"; actress Anne Archer discusses the original ending of "Fatal Attraction"; and mimic Rich Little does his impersonation of Clark Gable and creates a new happy ending for "Gone with the Wind".
