Summary

One in this series of weekly programs that focuses on issues surrounding the world of rock music. This program concerns the Los Angeles riots, which began on April 29, 1992, when a jury cleared four police officers of assault charges in the beating of motorist Rodney King. On May 1, 1992, anchor Kurt Loder reports that the riots have spread from South Central L.A. to Hollywood, that the National Guard and Army troops have been dispatched, and that over 1700 fires, 3000 arrests, 1200 injuries, and thirty-one deaths have occurred. Coverage includes footage of the King beating and protests, fires, lootings, and random acts of violence. Commenting on the incident are Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) who represents the South Central district; Los Angeles Police Commissioner Daryl Gates, defending the officers; rap artist Ice-T on his song, "Cop Killer"; the Rev. Jesse Jackson; funnyman Sinbad; talk show host Arsenio Hall; New Jersey police officer Steven Rogers; and presidential candidates President George Bush and Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton. Included are interviews with college students denouncing the rioting, defending the officers, or discussing the ramifications for African-Americans. Those discussing racism in the police force include film director John Singleton, and rap artists Chuck D of Public Enemy; Kris Parker, also known as KRS-1; Tone Loc; and Eazy-E and M.C. Ren of N.W.A. (Niggaz with Attitude). In a "Choose or Lose" segment about the upcoming presidential election, MTV personality Tabitha Soren talks with write-in candidate Eileen Myles; Andre Marrou, candidate for the third largest political party, the Libertarian Party; and Dr. Lenora Fulani of the New Alliance party.
