Summary
Prepared for The Museum of Television & Radio exhibition "Bob & Ray: A Comedy Sampler," this compilation of radio and television footage focuses chronologically on the political humor of the comedy team of Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding. Featured clips include the following: an excerpt from the 1951 television program "The Bob and Ray Show" in which the team present the "Mayhem Razor Cavalcade of Politics" with a "remote" to a campaign train in Buffalo where a very nervous candidate (Elliott) makes a speech; a radio clip from 1951's "The Bob and Ray Show" featuring a discussion of President Truman's Economic Controls Bill; a 1951 TV excerpt in which the duo make a special offer to all politicians from the "Bob and Ray We Put Politicians on TV Agency," with a performance by Sen. Calhoun "Georgia" Brown (Elliott) on the ukelele; a radio clip from the same year featuring an interview with a new government official, the Interbureau Northwest Coordinator (Goulding), who doesn't know what he's supposed to be doing; 1952 footage from TV's "The Bob and Ray Show" in which the pair offer a Bob and Ray Political Rally Kit that comes complete with one majorette (Audrey Meadows) and one man with prompt cards (Elliott); and a radio bit from the same year in which Elliott covers the Democratic Convention in Chicago and interviews Goulding as a man running for office on the Groundhog Ticket. Also included are two 1972 appearances on "The Dick Cavett Show," including one in which Goulding appears as a Professional People Painter-Outer who paints out individuals whom politicians do not want to be seen in photos with; two excerpts from the 1972 series of TV specials, "Comedy News," including a routine where Goulding interviews Elliott as the Democratic Party Historian; a 1973 press conference on WOR radio with Wally Ballou (Elliott) announcing that he will run for governor of New York and fielding questions from actual WOR reporters; a bit from the PBS media issues series "Inside Story" in which Goulding appears as a vain judge who has decided to allow TV cameras in his courtroom to satisfy his own dreams of stardom; footage from 1982's "The Bob and Ray Public Radio Show" where Elliott interviews a man-on-the street about the president's speech on the economy; a "Late Night with David Letterman" appearance from the same year with Goulding as a politician running for office on both tickets; and another 1982 excerpt from "The Bob and Ray Public Radio Show" in which Elliott interviews Goulding as Ralph Moody Thayer, the corrupt mayor of Skunkhaven, New Jersey.
