EYEWITNESS TO HISTORY: KHRUSHCHEV IN NEW YORK (TV)
Summary
One in this series of news programs that analyzes in-depth the major events of the week. This program (reported by Walter Cronkite, Harry Reasoner, Howard K. Smith, and Daniel Schorr) chronicles Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev's visit to New York City in the fall of 1959, with footage of Khrushchev's sightseeing tour of the city, followed by his address at the United Nations. Eleanor Roosevelt escorts the Soviet premier and his wife to the gravesite of the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt, after which Khrushchev visits Wall Street and the Empire State Building. While touring the city, he comments that he sees no difference between the two American political parties. Khrushchev himself is a tourist attraction as over 500,000 New Yorkers try to catch a glimpse of him. The program includes footage of his speech to the United Nations, during which the Soviet leader proposes total nuclear disarmament over a four-year period. He also addresses such issues as Communist China, colonialism, and atom bomb testing. Includes commercials.
