ABC NEWS FORUM: MEN, SEX, AND RAPE: WITH PETER JENNINGS (TV)
Summary
This special program, hosted by Peter Jennings, examines the issue of rape in the U.S. through a live panel discussion, which takes place in the Duncan Theatre at Palm Beach Community College in Florida. Panelists include the following: University of Michigan law professor Catharine MacKinnon; author Dr. Warren Farrel; author Naomi Wolf; Dr. Barry Burkhart, clinical psychologist at Auburn University; Boston University law professor Rikki Klieman; U.S. News & World Report columnist John Leo; Cassandra Thomas, president of the National Coalition Against Sexual Assault; Dr. Fred Berlin, director of the Sexual Disorders Clinic at Johns Hopkins University; Dr. Mary Koss, professor of psychology and psychiatry at the University of Arizona; author Susan Faludi; attorney F. Lee Bailey; and Dr. Roderick Hall, director of mental health services of the Florida Department of Corrections. Topics discussed include the following, among others: the traditional bachelor party as an example of viewing women as pornography; the connection between pornography and rape crimes; a common male perspective of a woman working a bachelor party; the way women wind up in highly vulnerable situations; the reason rape is more often associated with power than sex; the difficulty of identifying a man as a potential rapist; reasons that people are uneducated about rape; whether a woman's behavior is essential to her well-being; the way rapists find glamour in the violent act; the definition of rape; whether a clear-cut definition of rape exists; the way scenes from classic movies, such as "Gone With The Wind," depict rape in an elegant fashion; whether women should fight back against attackers; the reason rape should not be the primary gender issue; the unreliability of statistics on rape; the way women tend to ridicule men, even though not all men are rapists; the extent to which responsibility for rape prevention falls on women's shoulders; the way some men do not even know they have committed rape; the way rape laws differ in states throughout the country, and whether they are tough enough; and whether the courts handle rape differently than other serious crimes. Following these comments, audience members make comments, leading to discussions about the following topics, among others: the legal system's tendency to drag out the rape victim's emotional ordeal; two facts about rape that are frequently misunderstood; educating people regarding respect toward others; the distinction between rape and child molestation; socialization factors of rape that seem to get lost; whether rapists can be completely rehabilitated; and the value of rehabilitation methods that are used. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements. Commercials include Tommy Lasorda and Dan Dierdorf for Ultra Slim Fast diet shakes; public service announcements include John Denver for the National Arbor Day Foundation. This program is closed-captioned.
