CNN SOVIET COUP COVERAGE, HOUR 8: "DAYBREAK" AND "BUSINESS MORNING" (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:26295. The eighth hour of CNN's coverage of the attempted coup against Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. The hour begins with anchor Patrick Greenlaw of "Daybreak" reporting that about a thousand people have gathered in Red Square in an attempt to stop the tanks from entering -- the first mention of resistance from the Russian people. In the latest news, armored personnel carriers are officially reported to be outside of the Russian Federation Building where Russian President Boris Yeltsin appeared in a press conference earlier; British Prime Minister John Major makes a statement and answers questions in front of 10 Downing Street (shown live); and world stock markets are tumbling. CNN's Moscow bureau chief Steve Hurst interviews Russian journalists Al Gurnov and Yuri Rostov (both of Russian Federation Television, which has been shut down), who relate information that soldiers told them. The progress of Hurricane Bob is updated by anchor Molly McCoy, who interviews Dr. Bob Sheets, director of the National Hurricane Center in Coral Gables, Fla. He reports that the storm has picked up speed and should make landfall at the eastern end of Long Island or Rhode Island around noon. Bob Franken reports on the storm damage in Ocean City, Md. On "Business Morning," Jan Hopkins and Deborah Marchini summarize the details known about the coup so far, and Prof. Vladimir Kvint discusses the economic ramifications of the coup. Reporter Todd Benjamin explains the Japanese (Nikkei index) stock market plunge in a live report, along with comments from Andrew Ballingal of BZW Securities and Mike Benson, chief of Lehman Brothers International, who forecasts the reaction from Wall Street; included is a review of the effect on the U.S. stock market so far. Continues with T: 26297.
