CNN SOVIET COUP COVERAGE, HOUR 11: CNN SPECIAL REPORT (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:26298. The 11th hour of CNN's coverage of the attempted coup against Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. This special report continues with Reid Collins (in Washington, D.C.) interviewing Michael Beschloss, an expert on the Soviet Union, about Pres. George Bush's recent statement to the press. Anchor Bobbie Battista (in Atlanta, Ga.) concludes this portion of the special report. Ralph Wenge explains the events that have unfolded so far: Gorbachev is under house arrest; a state of emergency has been declared in the Soviet Union; all power is now held by the State Committee; and tanks and armored personnel carriers are being deployed in and around Moscow. CNN Moscow bureau chief Steve Hurst reports that the Soviet military has seized control of the port of Tallinn in the Baltic republic of Estonia; Russian President Boris Yeltsin has called for a nationwide coal strike to take place tomorrow; and, according to an unconfirmed report, the military has telephoned the Russian Federation Building and insisted that it be vacated within the hour. In Kennebunkport, Maine, Mary Tillotson reviews Pres. Bush's recent comments, and a videotape of the president at his early morning press conference is shown. Also in this hour: at the U.S. State Dept., Gene Randall reports that a special task force has been convened to monitor the situation; in front of the Soviet Embassy, Deborah Potter interviews dejected Soviet diplomats on their way to work; Wenge talks (via telephone) to Mark Walton in Kiev, who reports that there is nothing extraordinary happening in the streets, and that he has spoken to some people who support the change; a series of live pictures from Manezh Square in Moscow are shown without narration; Deborah Marchini reports on the state of the international financial markets; and Jan Hopkins reports from Wall Street. Following an update on the progress of Hurricane Bob by Dr. Bob Sheets of the National Hurricane Center in Coral Gables, Fla., the hour concludes with Wenge interviewing Beschloss and Daniel Papp, another expert on Soviet affairs, who also respond to viewer call-in questions. Continues with T:26629.
