CNN SOVIET COUP COVERAGE, HOUR 21: "MONEYLINE WITH LOU DOBBS" AND "CROSSFIRE: THE PARTY'S NOT OVER" (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:26636. The 21st hour of CNN's coverage of the attempted coup against Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. On "Moneyline With Lou Dobbs," Dobbs gives a review of the coup and discusses the coup plotters. In reports and brief interviews, topics covered include the global implications of the coup; the uncertainty surrounding Soviet oil production; the future of the Soviet grain trade; and the reasons why the new coup leaders would be bad for American business. In an interview with Dobbs, U.S. Commerce Sec. Robert Mosbacher says that geopolitical issues must take precedence over the economic considerations. Irv Chapman reports on the future of military cutbacks, with comments by Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.), Frank Gaffney of the Center for Security Policy, and Howard Rubel of C.J. Lawrence. "Moneyline" analyst Myron Kandel concludes the program by commenting on the tumble of the Dow Jones industrial average as compared with other stock markets around the world. (See also T:26647 for a repeat of this edition of "Moneyline.") On "Crossfire: The Party's Not Over," hosts Pat Buchanan and Michael Kinsley review the situation in the Soviet Union. They are joined by Gaffney and former CIA Director William Colby for a discussion of whether the U.S. intelligence community was prepared for the coup, and what the coup means for the future of U.S.-Soviet relations. Bernard Shaw previews "Prime News" as the hour concludes. Continues with T:26644.

Includes commercials and promos. Cataloging of this program was made possible by a grant from the Times Mirror Foundation.
