CNN SOVIET COUP COVERAGE, HOUR 30: "CNN OVERNIGHT"
AND "LARRY KING LIVE" (TV)
Summary
Continued from T:26650. The 30th hour of CNN's
coverage of the attempted coup against Soviet President
Mikhail Gorbachev. "CNN Overnight" anchor Dave Michaels
reports that the commander of Soviet paratroop
regiments has been arrested for supporting Russian
President Boris Yeltsin, and that large troop movements
towards the Baltic republics and Leningrad have been
reported. In a repeat edition of "Larry King Live" (see
T:26645), King introduces Jeane Kirkpatrick, former U.S.
ambassador to the United Nations, who says that there
are some encouraging signs regarding the coup --
communications with the Soviet Union have not been cut,
and the leaders seem to be making an effort to talk to
the press. Gary Kasparov, the world chess champion
from Russia, says that the coup attempt is not a
surprise at all and that it will fail because the
leaders are weak. King's third guest, Richard
Dekmejian, professor of political science at the
University of Southern California, expresses his belief
that Pres. George Bush has not done enough to show
support for Yeltsin and to ensure Gorbachev's safety.
The three guests then respond to viewer call-in
questions. The final guest, former KGB operative
Stanislav Levchenko, expresses concern about internal
dangers stemming from the coup, and says that the KGB
has a minority of younger members who will support
Yeltsin. "CNN Overnight" interrupts "Larry King Live"
once with a report that the Russian parliament has sent
a list of demands to the Soviet government, and to
remind viewers of the special on Soviet crisis that will
air at 5:00 a.m. (see T:26652). Continues with T:26652.
