MAX GLICK: THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING (TV)
Summary
One in this series of children's programs from Canada, filmed on location in Vancouver, British Columbia. Based on the novel by Morley Torgov, this series concerns a likeable Jewish boy growing up in the town of Beausejour during the mid 1960s, where he lives with his parents and grandparents. In this episode the Glick family, along with the rest of the town of Beausejour, goes to spend Labor Day weekend at the lake. Max explains that the lakeside community is segregated, with the major local ethnic groups -- French Canadian, Jewish, and Polish -- each having its own section. When the Glicks arrive at the lake, they are shocked to find that their new neighbors are a Polish family who have crossed to the Jewish side of the lake. Only Max is happy about the neighbors, because their daughter is his "girlfriend" from school. After an initial hesitancy, the two families make friends and find that they have a lot in common in spite of the history of hatred between their ancestors. Then an unpleasant incident at the lake brings out everyone's doubts and prejudices, until the Rabbi finds a common language of humor and music to transcend ethnic barriers. No commercials.
