(TV)

Summary

Continued from T:27089. The 34th hour of CNN's coverage of the attempted coup against Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. On "Daybreak," Reid Collins and Bobbie Battista review the Soviet situation. Included are the following reports: the Russian parliament has made demands of the Soviet government; the Russian foreign minister is on his way to Washington, D.C.; 100,000 people in Leningrad and 30,000 in Moscow are protesting the coup; Russian President Boris Yeltsin has spoken to the protestors (video not yet available); one man has been killed in the Baltics, as the military continues to move throughout the republics; and Soviet foreign minister Aleksandr Bessmertnykh is "sick" and has not been seen. Following reports from the White House and U.S. State Dept., Collins interviews Sino-Soviet expert Peter Reddaway about the expectations for the success or failure of the coup and international reaction to it. The interview is followed by a "Daybreak" science report concerning the Channel Islands Nature Sanctuary near California, and other national news is reported by Collins and Battista. Deborah Marchini gives a financial news update, and Battista interviews U.S.S.R. expert Michael Beschloss on the encouraging signs coming out of Russia. In "News From Medicine," Sheryl Kahn reports on the American Medical Association's (AMA) attempts to improve the image of doctors.
