CNN SOVIET COUP COVERAGE, HOUR 93: "MONEYLINE WITH
LOU DOBBS" AND "CROSSFIRE" (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:27545. The 93rd hour of CNN's coverage of the attempted coup against Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. On "Moneyline with Lou Dobbs," Jan Hopkins (substituting for Lou Dobbs) reviews the events of the day in Moscow, including Gorbachev's press conference, the arrest of the coup leaders, and the fireworks over the Russian Parliament Building. Hopkins then reviews the U.S. financial news. Among the reports in this program are an examination of the new unemployment figures released today and soaring unemployment in the automobile industry and commercial banking industry; a look at the future of investment in the Soviet Union in light of the coup's failure; and a report on how U.S. Defense Department cuts will hurt some large companies. Hopkins interviews Frank Zarb, chairman and CEO of Smith Barney, about the Soviet Union and the Salomon Brothers scandal. The program concludes with Myron Kandel commenting on credit card companies and the selling of their mailing lists. On "Crossfire," hosts Michael Kinsley and Pat Buchanan discuss the declaration of independence by the Baltic republics. Kinsley and Buchanan are joined by Associated Press correspondent Barry Schweid, Lithuanian information officer Victor Nakas, and Alexander Shalnev, U.S. correspondent for the Russian newspaper Isvestia, who discuss whether immediate recognition of Baltic independence by the United States would speed up the destruction of the Soviet empire and create an unstable situation. As the hour concludes, Susan Rook and Bernard Shaw preview the upcoming program "CNN Special: Soviet Crisis." Continues with T:27730.
