CNN SOVIET COUP COVERAGE, HOUR 56: "DAYBREAK" AND
"BUSINESS MORNING" (TV)
Summary
Continued from T:27606. The 56th hour of CNN's
coverage of the attempted coup against Soviet President
Mikhail Gorbachev. "Daybreak" continues from the
previous hour with anchors Patrick Greenlaw and Molly
McCoy reviewing the details of developments in the
Soviet Union: the Russian parliament has asked all
able-bodied men to present themselves at the Russian
Federation Building to defend it against a suspected
attack; Russian President Boris Yeltsin has told the
Russian parliament that the KGB has decided to allow
him to travel to the Crimea to see Gorbachev; the
Communist Party has urged Acting President Gennadi
Yanayev to meet with Gorbachev immediately in order to
clarify the crisis; and virtually all communications
centers in the Baltics have been captured by troops
loyal to the coup. Other reports include a look at how
the coup will affect an American port in New Orleans;
the U.S. State Dept.'s plans and Sec. of State James
Baker's schedule; and Pres. George Bush's plans for the
day. On "Business Morning," Deborah Marchini and Jan
Hopkins report on how the international stock markets
have rebounded from their recent sharp decline. A
report from Tokyo analyzes the sharp upswing in the
Nikkei average, and a report from Washington, D.C.,
examines the Federal Reserve's reaction to the coup.
Following an interview with Peter Beutel, energy
director for Pegasus Econometrics, reporter Kathleen
Behof examines how the coup will affect grain and corn
farmers in America. This hour concludes with McCoy
giving an update on the Soviet situation. Continues
with T:27665.
