CNN SOVIET COUP COVERAGE, HOUR 62: CNN NEWS HOUR
(TV)
Summary
Continued from T:27669. The 62nd hour of CNN's
coverage of the attempted coup against Soviet President
Mikhail Gorbachev. Among the new developments
reported by anchors Bobbie Battista and Reid Collins in
this hour: the tanks are clearly leaving Moscow;
Gorbachev will be back in Moscow tonight; NATO
officials report that Russian President Boris Yeltsin
has contacted them and assured them that he is in
control of the Soviet armed forces; the Dow Jones
industrial average is up more than 50 points; although
ABC and CBS News are reporting that Soviet Defense
Minister Dmitri Yazov has committed suicide, CNN cannot
confirm this; Lithuanian TV representatives report that
they have regained control of their communications
stations; and Soviet Foreign Minister Aleksandr
Bessmertnykh has said that his silence during the coup
was a result of his illness. Michael Beschloss, an
analyst on the Soviet Union, discusses the failed coup's
implications for the future of the Soviet Union. Other
reports include a "News From Medicine" segment that
examines whether Gorbachev suffers from diabetes, and
a look at how the coup has affected an American port
(New Orleans). The hour concludes with a taped press
conference held by Gorbachev advisors Karen Shakhnazov,
Arkady Volsky, Vitaly Ignatenko, and Vadim Bakatin. As
the hour concludes, Battista summarizes the
developments and reports that Pres. George Bush has
asked for a pool camera to tape a message. Continues
with T:27671.
