STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION: THE DRUMHEAD (TV)

Summary

One in this series of science fiction programs about the voyages of the U.S.S. Enterprise in the 24th century. This sequel to the original "Star Trek" series is set approximately 85 years after the journeys of the first Enterprise crew. In this episode, renowned Starfleet Admiral Norah Satie assists Capt. Picard with an investigation on the Enterprise when an exploded dilithium chamber leads to the discovery of an attempt to smuggle plans to Romulans. J'Ddan, a Klingon exchange officer, admits that he smuggled the plans, though he disavows responsibility for the explosion; nonetheless, Satie develops a conspiracy theory about the Klingons and Romulans. In her zealous effort to discover traitors to the Federation, she becomes convinced that crew member Simon Tarses is guilty, and Picard grows uncomfortable with some of her methods during the inquiry. Picard becomes increasingly disconcerted as Satie relentlessly persists in her investigation of the alleged conspiracy, even after evidence surfaces proving that the explosion was an accident. The investigation commandeered by Satie and her aides becomes a "witch-hunt" under the auspices of authority, and when Picard openly asks for the hearings against Tarses to end, Admiral Satie puts the captain on trial.
