GREAT PERFORMANCES: DANCE IN AMERICA: THE SEARCH FOR NIJINSKY'S RITE OF SPRING (TV)
Summary
One in this dance series presented under the umbrella of "Great Performances." This documentary explores the re-creation of "Le Sacre du Printemps," a controversial ballet that caused a legendary riot when it premiered in 1913. The program touches on the origins of the Ballet Russe (de Diaghilev), whose founder and director, Serge Diaghilev, hired Stravinsky to write "Le Sacre." The original version, choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky to Stravinsky's orchestral score, was lost, but in 1971, nearly 60 years later, Millicent Hodson became interested in recovering it and discovered that Robert Joffrey was also interested. Included are interviews with Marie Rambert, a dancer who performed in the original verison and assisted with the re-creation, as well as footage of Stravinsky returning to the house where he composed the score and talking about the composition process. In the final portion of the program, The Joffrey Ballet performs the reconstructed version in its entirety.
