GREAT PERFORMANCES: DANCE IN AMERICA: BALANCHINE IN AMERICA (TV)
Summary
One in this dance series presented under the umbrella of "Great Performances." In this program, the New York City Ballet and Orchestra, conducted by Hugo Fiorato, performs two pieces choreographed by George Balanchine: "Serenade," set to Tchaikovsky's Serenade for String Orchestra, and "Western Symphony," set to original music by Hershy Kay. Peter Martins, ballet master of the New York City Ballet, introduces each dance and briefly comments on their meaning and content. The principal dancers for "Serenade" are Darci Kistler, Kyra Nichols, Maria Calegari, Adam Luders, and Leonid Kozlov. In "Western Symphony," the leading roles are danced by Melinda Roy, Jock Soto, Stephanie Saland, Robert LaFosse, Helene Alexopoulos and Peter Boal.
