SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE {KATHLEEN TURNER, JOHN WAITE}
{EDITED FOR SYNDICATION} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. Actress Kathleen Turner hosts this program with musical guest John Waite. The cold opening features Billy Crystal as Fernando, a smooth-talking Latin movie star who favors the phrase, "You look mahvelous." Fernando pays a visit to Phil Donahue's green room where he talks with two midget transvestites, a Nazi, and New York subway vigilante Bernhard Goetz. In her monologue, Turner presents photo stills illustrating the evolution of her movie career, but is censored when she gets to the 1984 Ken Russell picture, "Crimes of Passion." Also included are the following segments: a sketch featuring formation water-skiers (Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest) trading gruesome stories to the refrain, "I hate when that happens"; Julia Louis-Dreyfus in a commercial parody for the NORAD SAC -- a strategic airborne contraceptive device; Harry Shearer plays self-proclaimed arbiter of fashion Mr. Blackwell, in a talk show sketch in which Blackwell interviews a young man (Martin Short) appearing in a production at the "James Franciscus Dinner Theater"; Billy Crystal plays talk show host Joe Franklin in a spoof of the long-running series, with a panel featuring gibbering magician Doug Henning (Martin Short), fidgety actor Alan Arkin (Christopher Guest), and Kathleen Turner as a rising cabaret star who lip-synchs a number; popster John Waite performs a song; Christopher Guest anchors the news, discusses the job shuffling occurring in President Ronald Reagan's cabinet, and is joined by "SNL" consumer analyst Gary Kroeger, who offers his own beefcake photo calendar, and the ubiquitous Doug Henning (this time played by Rich Hall), who reports on the budget deficit by; and Billy Crystal performs a poignant comic monologue as Tony, an ex-boxer who now works as a popcorn vendor. Commercials deleted. (This is an edited, syndication version of this program. The live, original version aired January 12, 1985.)
