CAVALCADE OF STARS {THE HONEYMOONERS -- FOURTH SKETCH} (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy/variety series. Jackie Gleason stars in this variety program, which features the fourth sketch of "The Honeymooners"; this ongoing sketch would later develop into the television series about blustering bus driver Ralph Kramden, his long-suffering but understanding wife, Alice, and their neighbors, Ed and Trixie Norton. Gleason begins the show with a few jokes about orchestra leader Sammy Spear, and introduces a performance by The June Taylor Dancers. The dance number is followed by the "poet of the piano," Carmen Cavallaro, who plays a Polonaise by Chopin. In "The Honeymooners" sketch, Ralph decides to leave Alice when she belittles his livelihood. Following the sketch, The June Taylor Dancers return to perform again, accompanied by singer Harry Belafonte. Announcer Don Russell then introduces the popular Gleason character "Joe the Bartender," who shares outrageous gossip about such locals as Moriarity the Undertaker and "Crazy" Guggenheim. The sketch is followed by the "thrilling baritone voice" of singer Igor Goren, who performs "Without a Song" and Rossini's "La Danso." The program concludes with a sketch about Reginald Van Gleason, the wealthy ne'er-do-well who, much to his parents' chagrin, has become a scout leader for a ragged troop of scouts. Includes commercials and a public service announcement. Cataloging of this program was made possible by The Coca-Cola Company.
