STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION: SAREK (TV)

Summary

One in this series of science fiction programs about the voyages of the U.S.S. Enterprise in the 24th century. This sequel to the original "Star Trek" series is set approximately 85 years after the journeys of the first Enterprise crew. In this episode, the elderly, renowned Federation Ambassador Sarek begins displaying signs of a rare Vulcan disease that gradually erodes all control over the emotions, thus endangering an important peace mission between the Federation and the mysterious Legaran race. On board the Enterprise, while awaiting the arrival of the Legarans, crew members witness Sarek acting uncharacteristically moody, yet his wife, Perrin, insists that nothing is wrong with him. However, when various crew members begin displaying irrational, overemotional behavior, Dr. Crusher discovers that this bizarre behavior indicates that Sarek has contracted a rare Vulcan disease called Bendii syndrome; disaster can be avoided only if Sarek withdraws from the diplomatic talks. Picard faces a potentially volatile situation: the Federation wants peace with the Legarans, who will only meet with Sarek himself, yet if Sarek is truly ill, he could destroy the Federation's chances of relations with the Legarans forever. While Picard could unnecessarily humiliate the respected Vulcan by confronting him, he is determined to discover the truth before Sarek ends his glorious career in utter disgrace.
