MISTER ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD: MR. ROGERS GOES TO SCHOOL {DAY 1} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of programs for young children, hosted by Fred Rogers, which uses puppets and music to teach patience and cooperation, while providing guidance to help children cope with feelings and frustrations. This episode is one in an ongoing series subtitled "Mr. Rogers Goes to School," in which the host aims to render young children more comfortable in their forays into formal education. He begins by singing a jazzy rendition of his signature song, "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" Rogers then uses a pair of Matchbox cars to illustrate the difference between a station wagon and a school bus. "Some children ride a school bus to school," he explains. Next, Mr. Rogers is given a tour of a local kindergarten by Ms. Hartman, a kindly schoolmarm who outlines the things to which children starting school can look forward. She shows off the cafeteria, stocked with milk and snacks, and then talks about puzzles, crayons, playgrounds, and story time. Mr. Rogers brings the camera into the school's bathrooms to show children that they are equipped with diminutive toilets that are "just your size." Mr. Rogers closes the program by taking the viewing audience into the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, where hand-puppet characters interact with humans in the mythical kingdom of King Friday XIII. This program is closed-captioned.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, 2000.
