ACADEMY AWARDS, THE 65TH ANNUAL (TV)

Summary

The sixty-fifth annual Academy Awards presentation, hosted by Billy Crystal. The program begins with footage of the arrival of many of the presenters, nominees, and performers at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. When the awards presentation begins, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Robert Rehme, dedicates this program to the women who work in the film industry and introduces Geena Davis, who presents a film tribute. Host Billy Crystal then enters atop an enormous Oscar statuette dragged in by Jack Palance, and Crystal sings his medley of songs about the Best Picture nominees -- "Scent of a Woman," Howard's End," "A Few Good Men," "The Crying Game," and "Unforgiven." Next, the presentation of awards begins. In this first half of the program, presenters include Jack Palance, Angelica Huston, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Mercedes Ruhl, Joe Pesci, Marisa Tomei, Gregory Peck, Sarah Jessica Parker, David Paymer, an animated Snow White, Kathy Bates, Jack Valenti, Glenn Close, Sharon Stone, Richard Gere, Whoopi Goldberg, Andie McDowell, Jon Lovitz, Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, and Sophia Loren. Features include a reel of clips from films edited or co-edited by women; Brad Kane and Lea Salonga's performance of "A Whole New World" from "Aladdin"; the posthumous presentation of a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Audrey Hepburn; Sheila E and Placido Domingo's rendition of "Beautiful Maria of My Soul" from "The Mambo Kings"; footage from the presentation of the Scientific and Technical Awards; and Liza Minnelli's performance of "Ladies' Day" by John Kander and Fred Ebb. Award recipients for outstanding achievements include: Marisa Tomei for "My Cousin Vinny" (Actress in a Supporting Role); Joel Cox for "Unforgiven" (Film Editing); Gene Hackman for "Unforgiven" (Actor in a Supporting Role); Michele Burke, Greg Cannom, and Matthew W. Mungle for "Bram Stoker's Dracula" (Make-Up); Sam Karmann for "Omnibus" (Live-Action Short Film); Joan C. Gratz for "Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase" (Animated Short Film); "Indochine" (Foreign-Language Film); Lucianna Arrighi and Ian Whittaker for "Howard's End" (Art Direction/Set Direction); Doug Chiang, Ken Ralston, Doug Smythe, and Tom Woodruff, Jr., for "Death Becomes Her" (Visual Effects); Thomas C. Goodwin and Gerardine Wurzburg for "Educating Peter" (Documentary Short Subject); and David Kasper and Barbara Trent for "The Panama Deception" (Documentary Feature).

Award recipients for outstanding achievements include: Alan Menken for "Aladdin" (Original Score); Ruth Prawer Jhabvala for "Howard's End" (Screenplay Adaptation); Neil Jordan for "The Crying Game" (Original Screenplay); Doug Hemphill, Chris Jenkins, Simon Kaye, and Mark Smith for "The Last of the Mohicans" (Sound); Alan Menken and Tim Rice for "A Whole New World" from "Aladdin" (Original Song); Emma Thompson for "Howard's End" (Actress in a Leading Role); Phillippe Rousselot for "A River Runs Through It" (Cinematography); Eiko Ishioka for "Bram Stoker's Dracula" (Costume Design); Al Pacino for "Scent of a Woman" (Actor in a Leading Role); Clint Eastwood for "Unforgiven" (Director); and "Unforgiven" (Picture).
