BRIDESHEAD REVISITED, PART 8: BRIDESHEAD DESERTED (TV)

Summary

Part eight in this eleven-part adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's novel about Charles Ryder and his relationship with the aristocratic Flyte family, residents of the Brideshead estate. In this episode, Charles leaves Sebastian in Morocco and returns to Marchmain House where he visits with Brideshead to set up a fund for Sebastian. Brideshead commissions Charles to paint some pictures of the house since it's going to be torn down. Charles finishes the project with surprising ease and relives some of the splendid years through his work. Cordelia and Charles go out to dinner and mourn the decline of the family estate. Time passes and Charles becomes a successful architectural painter, never in the following 10 years feeling as alive as he had during his time with Sebastian. He marries, but the union provides little satisfaction. A trip to Latin America leaves him feeling as discontented as he did when he left. As Charles and his wife Celia board a boat back to England, Charles discovers that Julia, whom he hasn't seen in 10 years, is onboard. He grows obsessed with idea of meeting her, even passing along some red roses intended for Celia. When Celia gets seasick after a storm, Charles and Julia arrange to meet on deck before lunch.
