MACNEIL/LEHRER NEWSHOUR, THE {GENEVA SUMMIT/COLUMBIAN VOLCANO AFTERMATH} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of nightly news analysis programs. Hosted by Robert MacNeil with Jim Lehrer, this program focuses on the Geneva summit between Pres. Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Reporting from Geneva on the eve of this historic encounter, Lehrer provides a summary of the day's events, which includes footage of the Gorbachevs and the Reagans at state functions. In an extended interview, Lehrer questions Secretary of State George Shultz on the upcoming meetings between the two nations. Among the issues discussed: summit goals with respect to humanitarian concerns and arms control; his negotiations in 1982 with Andrei Gromyko, which inspired discussion about the nonproliferation of nuclear weapons; his recent meeting with Gorbachev in Moscow in preparation for the summit; and his optimistic expectations for the encounter between Gorbachev and Reagan. Providing analysis of the upcoming summit are former Ambassador to Moscow Malcolm Toon, and Donald Kimelman of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Lehrer leads a discussion with the two men, who address the following issues: the Soviet government's desire to curtail the arms race in order to concentrate on domestic affairs; skepticism of the Reagan administration's optimistic rhetoric; and the competition between the two nations to win favor among the international press. In a segment on the aftermath of the eruption of Nevado del Ruiz volcano, Jan Fisher of Independent News reports on the rescue operation and ongoing search for survivors from the volcano eruption in Armero, Columbia, where typhoid and looting have added to the woes of the survivors. In a related segment entitled "Columbia: Life After Disaster," June Massell's report features footage of the ravaged countryside, along with interviews of survivors who have lost both home and loved ones in the devastation. The report includes an interview with Dr. Jairo Osorno, who has been ministering to the injured. In a light-hearted essay entitled "None Too Tall, None Too Small," Mike Lupica of the Daily News muses on the height and girth of a variety of sports figures, from 7'7" basketball player Manuie Bol to 300 lb. football player William "Refrigerator" Perry. The segment includes footage of the players on and off the court and field, as well as a clip of Perry's appearance on "Late Night with David Letterman." The program also includes a brief segment on the conviction of four Palestinians and an accomplice, who were found guilty of illegal weapons possession by an Italian court in connection with the hijacking of the cruise ship Achille Lauro. No commercials.
