SALLY JESSY RAPHAEL: TV STARS FROM THE PAST, WHERE ARE THEY NOW? (TV)
Summary
One in this talk show series hosted by Sally Jessy Raphael. This program profiles the following television stars from the 1970s: Dick Van Patten and Susan Richardson (Tom and Susan Bradford) of "Eight is Enough"; Alison Arngrim (Nellie Oleson) of "Little House on the Prairie"; LaWanda Page (Aunt Esther) of "Sanford and Son"; BerNadette Stanis (Thelma Evans) on "Good Times"; and Dick Sargent (Darrin Stephens) of "Bewitched." First, Sally speaks with Sargent about his decision to become a gay activist; the high suicide rate for gay teenagers; his late lover of twenty years; his friendship with co-star Elizabeth Montgomery; and prejudice in the industry. Next, Sally talks with Page about how losing a hit series "is like hell"; her love for the late Redd Foxx; and how Foxx threatened to quit when she was briefly dropped from the series. Page weeps upon being presented with a belated gift from Foxx. Then, Arngrim describes Michael Landon's practical jokes with live frogs, and her work for children with AIDS, a decision inspired by the death of co-star Steve Tracy, who played Nellie's husband, Percival. BerNadette Stanis then discusses her family and her career as a teacher and theater producer. Susan Richardson recalls recent events that led to depression: she had accepted a job offer in South Korea that turned out to be a pedophilia ring, leaving her stranded and impoverished in Asia for six months. She remarks on life without fame or money, the help from co-star Dick Van Patten, and the Amish community where she now lives. Van Patten then appears onstage, much to Richardson's surprise, and discusses his memories of the series and of Foxx; he also introduces his son, Jimmy. Stanis recalls her father's brutal assault and death, and Richardson introduces her young daughter, Sara. Questions from the audience lead to discussion about television's failure to represent gays; Jimmy Van Patten's run in the New York Marathon; and Page's faith in God. As the program concludes, Page presents Sally with a T-shirt promoting her gospel concert.
