STEVE ALLEN SHOW, THE {ELVIS PRESLEY, ANDY GRIFFITH, IMOGENE COCA} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy/variety programs hosted by Steve Allen. This program features one of the earliest television appearances by singer Elvis Presley. After introducing audience member Ernie Kovacs and trading jokes with guest Milton Berle, Steve takes to the piano, joining Skitch Henderson and the orchestra in performing "Moonglow" from the film "Picnic." Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé provide vocals. Allen then introduces comedian Andy Griffith, who tells the story of "Hamlet" in a rich Southern accent. Other highlights include the following: "Yogi Allen" provides a comedic history of the practice of yoga; comedienne Imogene Coca joins Allen in a parody of movie scenes where a wife informs her husband that she is pregnant; and a tuxedo-clad Presley, backed by the Jordanaires, sings "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" and "Hound Dog" -- the latter to an actual basset hound which Allen has provided. The program concludes with a Western comedy and music revue called "Range Roundup," which features Allen, Griffith, Coca, and "Tumbleweed" Presley. Includes commercials.
