NIGHTLINE: STOP THE MADNESS {LOS ANGELES RIOTS} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of nightly newscasts. This special edition of "Nightline" focuses on the riots sweeping Los Angeles in the wake of the Rodney King verdict and includes discussions with gang members and leaders from the black community. First, correspondent Judy Muller delivers a report on the aftermath of the riots, with footage of and comments by beating victim Rodney King; U.S. attorney Lourdes Baird; President George Bush; actor Wesley Snipes; and Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.). Koppel then speaks with two members of Los Angeles gangs, "Bone" and "Little Monster," who discuss their experiences on the L.A. streets, the motivation for the riots, and their feelings of rage toward a society that they feel betrays and persecutes them. Koppel explains that the gang members were to have taken part in a panel discussion at the First AME Church, but had been barred from the premises by the church's staff. Koppel then speaks with the Rev. Cecil Murray, pastor of the First AME Church, who accuses "Bone" and "Little Monster" of lying in their statements about the church, provoking high excitement from the assembled congregation. Murray also expresses his essential solidarity with the gang members as black Americans. Others assembled at the First AME Church include the Rev. Murray; Rep. Waters; L.A. county probation officer Jim Galipeau; and John Mack, president of the Los Angeles Urban League. Panel members discuss the following topics, among others: the alienation and contempt that rioting African-Americans feel toward President Bush; the lack of credible political leadership for this community; the hostility between blacks and Koreans that the riots demonstrate; the participation of people of all races in the looting during the riots; representatives of L.A. gangs who attempted to end the violence; the importance of using the riots as a learning experience; and the significance of Los Angeles as an example to the rest of the country. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements. This program is closed-captioned.
