BEAKMAN'S WORLD: BOATS, BEAKMANIA, AIRPLANES
(TV)
Summary
One in this series of live action children's programs
about big-haired, quick-witted science maven Beakman
and his cohorts, Josie and Lester, who explain the
principles of science through unorthodox experiments
and demonstrations. In this episode, Beakman answers
viewer mail and explains why boats float, planes fly,
woodpeckers peck, and why a drinking straw can be
shoved through a potato. Beakman, or the Beakmeister --
as the freakishly large mouse named Lester calls him --
answers these questions using marshmallows, aluminum
foil, nails, and other handy props. Superhero Balance
Man, who also has big hair and suspiciously resembles
the resident scientist, drops by to help explain how
planes use air pressure to fly. The program includes
footage of the first sustained airplane flight of 59
seconds by Orville and Wilbur Wright in Kitty Hawk,
North Carolina, on December 17, 1903.
(This series also began airing on CBS in 1993.)
