HALLMARK HALL OF FAME: THE SECRET GARDEN (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas presented by Hallmark. Based on Francis Hodgson Burnett's 1911 novel, this drama concerns Mary Lennox, a young girl orphaned in India who finds refuge with her wealthy English guardian, Archibald Craven. Mary moves into Craven's mansion in England and behaves terribly until Martha the maid and Martha's younger brother, Dickon, show her a brighter side of life. Mary hears about the forbidden "secret garden" which was locked up indefinitely after Craven's pregnant wife fell from a tree there and died. Determined to find the garden, Mary discovers the key, and with the help of Dickon she begins to rejuvenate the abandoned property. Craven's other reminder of his wife is his son, Colin, a sickly boy who is kept isolated in the mansion, throwing tantrums and terrorizing his nurses. When Mary accidentally enters his room, they form a special friendship that changes their lives forever. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements. This program is closed-captioned.

("Hallmark Hall of Fame" aired on NBC from 1952 to 1978; network affiliation varies after 1978.)

(Beginning with the live telecast of the opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors" on December 24, 1951, Hallmark has sponsored a series of dramatic specials which since 1952 have been titled "Hallmark Hall of Fame." From 1952 to 1955 Hallmark also presented "Hallmark Hall of Fame," a weekly half-hour dramatic anthology series hosted by Sarah Churchill. The first program, "Dr. Serocold," was televised in January 1952 under the title "Hallmark Television Theatre." This series also ran under the title "Hallmark Summer Theatre" in July and August 1952.)
