Summary

One in this series of science documentaries. This program is the final part of a five-part series on the history of computers. This episode examines the pros and cons of the computer network known as the Internet. Highlights of this program include the following: a discussion of how the Internet works and the many options it offers; how the Internet has changed the New York Stock Exchange and wiped out Britain's central marketplace; how the Internet affects the progress of science; people's fears about the wide use of the Internet; a look at "Seniornet"; how an information mistake fed into one system can affect records in other systems; privacy issues in relation to information systems; the disasters that a glitch in an Internet program can cause; Singapore's wide use of computer systems and the reasons for it; how the Internet backfired on the government of France; future uses for computers and what the machines will look like; and a final comparison of computers to books over the course of history.
