MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO'S 10TH ANNUAL TELEVISION FESTIVAL IN LOS ANGELES, THE: ROC {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's 10th Annual Television Festival in Los Angeles. Presented with, and held at, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This seminar honors "Roc," a comedy series about working-class garbage man Roc Emerson. "Roc" is also the first comedy to be telecast live on television in fifty years. Robert M. Batscha, president of The Museum of Television & Radio, opens the seminar and introduces the panel: creator Stan Daniels; executive producer Vic Kaplan; director Stan Lathan; co-writers/co-producers Brian Pollack and Mert Rich; executive producer Ehrich Van Lowe; and cast members Rocky Carroll, Charles S. Dutton, Carl Gordon, and Ella Joyce. Kaplan introduces a screening of two episodes, "Nightmare on Emerson Street" and "Roc Works for Joey." After the screening, Batscha opens the seminar to questions from the audience. While responding, the panelists cover the following topics, among others: the reasons for which the program's casting works so well; the differences between working on "Roc" and working in the theater; the advantages of doing the program live; the production schedule for the series; the creation of the program; negative and positive reactions to the show; the change in the program's theme song; Dutton's description of a "mild disaster" that occurred during a live shoot; upcoming storylines on "Roc"; the cast members' advice to aspiring actors; the origins of Dutton's nickname, Roc; the relative places of television and theater in American culture; and the backgrounds of the cast members.
