MURDER IN THE HEARTLAND {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
The first part of this two-part miniseries based on the true story of Charlie Starkweather, the 19-year-old who killed 11 people in Nebraska in 1958, and his 14-year-old girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, who accompanied him on his eight-day killing spree. Restless and bored with his job as a trash collector, Charlie robs a convenience store and kills the clerk. He next tries to ingratiate himself with Caril's mother and stepfather, but when they refuse to sanction the relationship, he shoots them both with the shotgun he keeps in the trunk of his car. Charlie and Caril try to flee the county, but their stolen car is stuck in the mud. Gus, an old farmer who lives on the outskirts of town, offers help, but when his good-natured ribbing rubs Charlie the wrong way, he is gunned down. Elmer Scheele, the county prosecutor supervising the investigation, is shocked by the random brutality of the murders and initiates a painstaking search for the suspects while trying to calm the community's growing unrest. The FBI mounts an interstate manhunt and Governor Anderson calls in the National Guard, but Charlie manages to evade capture, and the killings continue. Caril finally flags down a police cruiser and begs the officer to apprehend Charlie, but he leaps into his car and tears off down the highway. Includes commercials, promos, and a public service announcement. This program is closed-captioned. (For part two, see T:31205.)
