MURDER IN THE HEARTLAND {PART 2 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
The second part of a two-part miniseries based on the true story of Charlie Starkweather, the 19-year-old who killed 11 people in Nebraska in 1958, and his 14-year-old girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, who accompanied him on his eight-day killing spree. As this part begins, Wyoming police eventually shoot and subdue Charlie after a high-speed car chase. During interrogation, Charlie maintains that Caril was not involved with the crimes that were committed. Distraught to learn that her parents have been killed, Caril pleads with the police to believe that she was not an accomplice but a hostage forced along at gunpoint. Feeling betrayed, Charlie changes his testimony to implicate Caril in the murders. McArthur, a compassionate lawyer who has been assigned to Caril's case, pledges that his client will be acquitted of all charges and holds a press coverage to point out that her complicity is questionable. At the trial, Charlie and Caril offer contradictory accounts of the killing spree. Includes commercials, promos, and a public service announcement. This program is closed-captioned.
