HALLMARK HALL OF FAME: THE PATRIOTS (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramatic specials presented by Hallmark. This drama depicts the conflicts between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton during the early history of the United States between the years 1790 and 1801. Both men fight for what they feel the country needs: Hamilton believes that the establishment of an aristocracy is the solution to the young nation's turmoil, while Jefferson feels that equality for all men is the answer. The story covers the following historical events and topics: Jefferson fights for a "no slaves" clause in the Constitution; Hamilton argues for the use of paper money and the need for foreign credit; Jefferson is reluctant to remain in politics because of its ill effect on his personal life, but George Washington needs him to stay in the political arena; the Capitol is moved from New York to the South; tensions mount between Northerners and Southerners; Hamilton is blackmailed for his indiscretions; and a plague of yellow fever strikes. The story also covers the public rivalry between Jefferson and Hamilton; Jefferson's hatred of political parties; Washington's death; the problems with the electoral process; and Jefferson's rise to the presidency. Includes commercials and a public service announcement.
